Doctoral studies at ITAS

ITAS offers doctoral students the opportunity to do their doctorate in a multidisciplinary environment. The variety of disciplines (including physics, sociology, philosophy, geoecology, engineering, chemistry) and thematic focuses at ITAS enables doctoral students to receive feedback on their dissertation topics from different perspectives.

Information on the organizational framework and the implementation of doctoral projects can be found in the “Guidelines for Doctoral Students at ITAS” and in the “Guidelines for the Doctorate at KIT.”

Using a supervision agreement, goals and expectations for the doctoral period can be agreed upon together with the supervisor and, if applicable, the mentor.

Both when preparing for a scholarship and after signing an employment contract, an application must be submitted to the relevant faculty. For this, registration with Docata / KHYS and an exposé of the topi are required. After approval by the faculty, student enrollment is mandatory if it is a scholarship or a contract with an employment level of less than 50%.

There are three ways to finance your PhD: research contract, scholarship, or as an external student (self-funding). In the latter case, no access to the infrastructure is granted, and no expenses are covered.

The time required to complete the process (e.g., supervision agreement, exposé of the topic, approval by the faculty, enrollment, and contract or scholarship confirmation) can take several months and can be extended by vacations and absences of the persons involved.
