Municipal climate protection (KommMa)

Project description

Logo des Projekts KommMa

In Germany, we are increasingly feeling the negative effects of climate change on our lives. Many local authorities have therefore already begun to take concrete and effective measures to protect our planet. This involves making decisions that affect energy consumption and the way we travel. Ultimately, this has an impact on the environment and people’s quality of life – locally and beyond.

The municipal level can thus initiate major changes in areas such as urban planning, transport, energy supply, water management, and green space design, steering them toward climate protection and sustainability. In this complex network, it is often difficult to find your way around and obtain the information needed to select the most appropriate climate protection measures for your own municipality, especially when financial and human resources are limited. At the same time, municipalities have a social responsibility, serve as role models, and must comply with legal requirements.

The concept of the KommMa joint project is intended to help municipalities achieve their climate protection goals as efficiently and effectively as possible. As part of the project, a tool is being developed that provides municipalities with information on CO2 equivalents, costs, and time required for the measures they plan to implement.

ITAS is responsible for energy measures, the development of prototype municipalities as test environments, and the development of sample values. Furthermore, ITAS is involved in external communication, helps shape the knowledge transfer, and builds bridges between science, practice, and the public.
