30 years of ITAS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WE CELEBRATE OUR ANNIVERSARY
Technology assessment was considered by many as “worrywarting” and
was scientifically hardly recognized when roughly 30 employees of ITAS
started their work on the grounds of the former research center in 1995.
Times have changed. In the wake of the energy transition and
digitalization, the demand for scientific “TA” is greater than ever.
ITAS has developed accordingly. What began as an advice-oriented
research facility has developed steadily into an institute well
recognized in science, politics, and the public –located in the center
of Karlsruhe and with more than 150 researchers from all over the world.
We will be celebrating our anniversary on 30 June 2025 with a special
lecture by sustainability expert Maja Göpel and the school competition “#KA2055: Unsere Stadt, unsere
Zukunft“
(#KA2055: Our city, our future).
Celebrate with us!

ENERGY TRANSITION: ITAS CONTRIBUTES TO WEF GUIDELINES
How can the needs of people and the environment be better considered
during the transition to renewable energies? The World Economic Forum
(WEF) has issued new guidelines on this topic that are also based on the
expertise of ITAS researchers.
more
BLUE-GREEN INFRASTRUCTURES FOR THE CLIMATE-RESILIENT CITY
How can cities use waters and green spaces to better adapt to climate
change? Researchers from ITAS and the Centre for Environmental Research
in Leipzig look into this question in a new project.
more
ENERGY TRANSITION MODELS AND THEIR IMPACT
How do models influence our view of energy futures? In a new KIT
project, Armin Grunwald and Daniel Lang are contributing knowledge from
ITAS on how scientific models can become more transparent and
participatory with the help of real-world laboratories.
more
ON THE WAY TO THE MUNICIPAL HEAT TRANSITION
How can we heat in a climate-friendly way in the future? In the
KOMM-WÄRME project, ITAS researchers examine how the municipal heat
transition can succeed with measures at the interface between technology
and society.

NEW ISSUE ON CARE CONCEPTS IN SUSTAINABILITY TRANSFORMATIONS
How can concepts of precaution and care be harnessed for a
socio-ecological transformation? And what impetus can they give to
technology assessment? These are the questions addressed by the current
TATuP.

TATUP ON THE WEB OF SCIENCE
Good news for all TATuP authors: The journal has been retroactively
listed on the “Web of Science” research platform from issue 31/1
(2022) - a milestone for the visibility of the global TA community.

FROM AIR TAXIS TO BIOPRINTING AND LARGE ACTION MODELS
New topic briefs from TAB's Horizon Scanning offer a concise overview of
the opportunities and risks of new technologies and concepts. The short
profiles also stimulate future research and innovations.
more
HYBRID FORMS OF WORK AND THEIR SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS
The combination of onsite and offsite work has become widespread in
Germany in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. A new TAB study explores
the current prevalence of these forms of work, their acceptance, and
their health, economic and social impacts.
more
TAB STUDY ON NUCLEAR FUSION
Nuclear fusion is now within reach thanks to recent advances. A new
compact study examines the current state of the art and identifies
critical knowledge gaps and the resulting research needs on the way to a
possible fusion power plant.

Personalia:
Oliver Parodi, Susanne Ober, Daniel Lang and Marius Albiez  are
the winners of the GAIA Best Paper Award 2024. According to the
journal’s editorial board, their article “Real-world lab versus
real-world experiment: What makes the difference?” (GAIA 2/2024) helps
consolidate the emerging field of sustainability and transformation
research and maximize its impact.

Pascal Vetter has successfully defended his dissertation at the KIT Faculty of
Humanities and Social Sciences. His thesis deals with the human-centered
design of AI systems and the question of which methods and approaches
technology assessment can contribute to this.

New staff members:
Johanna Mehler (Research group “Digital Technologies and Societal Change” and
Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag)

“My research aims to better understand digital transformation in order
to shape it in the sense of sustainable, human-centered development. I
am particularly interested in the impact of digital technologies on
individuals, organizations, and society as a whole. At ITAS, I have a
wide range of opportunities to pursue these issues, be it in
interdisciplinary consortia or with a view to fields of application.
This also includes the development of new – especially digital –
research methods.”
