Project description

Questions regarding the implementation of municipal climate protection measures have to be solved at the interface between municipalities and science. Specifically, these issues include, for example, the decarbonization of energy supply, zero-emission public mobility, and sustainable water management. In the long run, prioritizing and standardizing such measures will lead to a blueprint that will serve as a comprehensive decision-making tool for implementing these measures. KIT has the competences in the fields of climate and urban research, energy and mobility research, as well as information sciences to provide support here.

This is the background of intensive negotiations between municipal representatives and KIT. Topics include the possibilities of a scientifically supported implementation of climate protection measures in a municipal environment. Particular attention is paid to energy, mobility, and water supply. The focus is also on the framework conditions regarding society, economy, climate, and time. They reveal the challenges faced by municipal institutions when it comes to implementing measures. ITAS will identify opportunities and risks of the individual climate protection measures, mainly by applying the Integrated Concept of Sustainable Development (ICoS). The intended approach of bundling climate protection measures and assessing them beyond their actual climate impact is pioneering in this field and paves the way for a successful implementation of municipal climate protection measures.
