Strengthening and Entangling Global Quantum Roots (SEGQuRo)

Project description

The “Strengthening and Entangling Global Quantum Roots (SEGQuRo)” project was a joint initiative of KIT (ITAS) and TU Delft (EEMCS), funded by the Centre for Quantum and Society in the Netherlands. The aim was to strengthen grassroots communities in quantum technologies around the globe, especially those in countries without strong national support or available resources for communities active in this field. The focus was on existing communities in the Global South and Widening countries. The project was conducted between February and September 2024 and consisted of six online meetings and a one-week in-person event in the Netherlands, primarily held in Delft and including a one-day excursion to Amsterdam.

The in-person event was attended by representatives of local grassroots communities from Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, Tunisia, and Turkey; participants from Ghana, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Zimbabwe joined the hybrid sessions online. The event focused on ethical, legal, and social aspects (ELSA) of QT and included a full-day workshop on equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). The program also featured lab visits to QuTech, House of Quantum in Delft, the Quantum Application Lab at CWI, and the Quantum.Amsterdam Experience.

The project led to follow-up events such as “Responsible Quantum Technologies: Impact of Geopolitics in the Indo-Pacific Region” in Singapore, the online meeting “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Quantum Technologies in Africa” organized by OneQuantum Africa and QZimbabwe, and the online event “Development prospects for quantum technologies in Latin America.” In addition, further cooperation between global actors in the QT domain was agreed upon to plan joint activities for the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (2025).
