“If many little people in many places do many little things, they can change the face of the world!” The project “Climate protection - let’s dare it together!” wants to promote a culture of sustainability, in which climate protection is realized naturally in everyday life, together with citizens and stakeholders in the district of Karlsruhe Oststadt. The project pursues the objective to develop climate-friendly alternative actions and daily routines together with interested citizens in the topic areas nutrition, mobility and consumption. Besides the recording of CO2-equivalent savings, another objective lies on specific awareness raising and sensitization in the field of climate protection.

Through collaborative formats in the topic areas, newly developed actions are to be strengthened and established. The specific issues that are brought into the topic areas are open and will be developed together with the participants depending on existing needs in the district. However, all have the following objectives in common:

  • substantial savings of CO2-equivalent through adapted actions in the fields of mobility, nutrition and consumption,
  • deepen awareness about climate and environmental protection among individuals and groups,
  • extension of the group of people who are well versed in climate and environmental protection (at different levels),
  • consolidation of neighborhoods and communities who promote climate protection together and are strong enough as a group to continue work after the end of the project.

Concretely, two target-group-specific actor networks are to be established:

  1. citizens, households, house communities, neighborhoods
  2. local gastronomy, cafeterias and canteens

Network 1 will develop project ideas in transdisciplinary workshops together with local practice partners. In the following project period, the project ideas will be realized experimentally under the motto “Create your world!”.

Network 2 will start with the identification of potential actors from the local gastronomy, cafeterias and canteens. Here, we want to work intensely on a climate positive change of the gastronomic business in order to enable consumers to have climate friendly food “outside the house” as well. In transdisciplinary workshops, we will determine goals and measures, which will be realized starting from the second year.

At the end of the first year, a preliminary potential analysis will give information about the potential CO2-eqivalent savings of the two networks. The developed goals and measures of the networks will be written down in a common action plan, which will serve as a basis for the realization of the ideas in the following years. At the end of the project duration, the effectively saved CO2-eqivalent will be estimated.

Moreover, climate coaches will be trained during the project to support the networks in the realization of the measures. They will be disseminators, support continuation and stabilization and promote the climate protection transfer to other districts.

The project “Climate protection - let’s dare it together!” is imbedded in the structures and tasks of the KIT-real-world lab, “District Future – Urban Lab” and cooperates with the “Karlsruhe School of Sustainability” (KSN).
