Project description

Logo KI-SIGS

KI-SIGS will establish an “AI Space for Intelligent Health Systems” in collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI) institutes in the northern German states of Bremen, Hamburg, and Schleswig-Holstein and with medical technology companies and partners from university hospitals.

The AI Space will be created using the following approach:

  1. Developing an AI platform aimed at connecting KI-SIGS partners with each other and with other relevant networks, exchanging AI development modules such as source codes and documents, and sharing clinical data in a protected space. In addition, regulatory and ethical requirements for the use of medical AI technologies will be developed.
  2. Defining a common research and development roadmap: Three areas have been identified as priority future fields for medical AI technologies (prevention/prognosis, diagnostics, and medical assistance systems) with the aim to avoid parallel developments in these areas and facilitate the transfer of knowledge between the KI-SIGS partners and thus also the feedback process between the projects and the platform.
  3. Fostering cooperation between stakeholders to promote AI innovation and knowledge transfer in the model region of Northern Germany. Among other things, an incentive and reward model for the provision of data and services on the AI platform will be developed. In addition, experiences from workshops, competitions, and other events will be exchanged, documented, and disseminated beyond the consortium.

On behalf of Universität zu Lübeck, ITAS will collaborate directly with the Institute for Electrical Engineering in Medicine (IME) at Universität zu Lübeck in KI-SIGS. ITAS will conceptualize and analyze the results of a KI-SIGS workshop on ethical, legal, and societal aspects (ELSA) related to responsible innovation (RI). Furthermore, it will act as a key advisor on the development of an RI roadmap. The RI/ELSA work in KI-SIGS will benefit from results of the EU project PRISMA: Piloting Responsible Research and Innovation in Industry, in which ITAS played a major role.
