ITAS and the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) want to meet the increasing importance of AI in the world of work with human-centered approaches. A joint symposium was held to prepare further collaborations.

The aim of the symposium “Digitalisierung in der Arbeitswelt: Konzepte, Methoden und Gestaltungsbedarf” (Digitalization in the world of work: concepts, methods and design needs), which was held in Karlsruhe on 2 and 3 November 2022, was to elicit thematic and methodological commonalities. The participants also wanted to sound out how a cooperation between the two institutions could be expanded.

The two-day event focused on the governance of digital applications and the design of digital work systems. In this context, it became apparent that both ITAS and BAuA pursue human-centered approaches in technology design and technology assessment and are also confronted with similar methodological challenges.

The participants also agreed that the use of artificial intelligence in the work context can hardly be overestimated in its relevance and that it is becoming increasingly important to include the needs of employees in the design of current and future digital worlds of work. The symposium marked the start of further joint activities in the field of digitalization of work, which will be specified next year. (07.12.2022)
