Project examines roads of Responsible Innovation

The up and coming concept of Responsible Innovation promises new and better forms of research and development. The new ITAS project "Responsible Innovation and TA" (RITA) takes a closer look at its basic principles and applications.

Even though "Responsible Innovation" is gaining ground in terms of becoming an overall concept for a more responsible innovation culture it remains blurry and diffuse. Still the concept is developing a strong scientific, political and social efficacy and therefore will shape future research and innovation processes making it important to critically reflect on.

How can responsible innovation processes be further developed and implemented? What are the conceptual foundations and promises? By using findings and insights from various projects RITA will investigate these questions in-depth. In order to make analytical and practical contributions RITA takes on two perspectives. First the project brings together often fragmented knowledge from different technology fields or experiences in diverse methods to create a platform for reflection. Second, RITA examines the analytical content and thus the scientific scope of the concept and compares it with other established forms of TA. The aim is to gain insights into where and how concepts like Responsible Innovation can extend and broaden well-known practices of TA.

Main topics of RITA are Responsible Innovation in different innovation systems, the role of industry, implementation in science and research, participation in innovation as well as connections to existing TA and innovation concepts. RITA understands itself as an open framework project enabling links to various third-party funded projects. (23.04.2015)
