Project description
The project BioEnergieDat aims at providing an up-to-date and comprehensive data base concerning the use of biomass for energy. This data base is meant to deliver data on currently available conversion technologies and on the ecological effects for production, fuel supply, and conversion processes. It can be employed to model process chains using open source software that has been developed during the project.
BioEnergieDat focuses on the following objectives:
- Provision of a valid, consistent data base composed of already existing data sets for biomass conversion technologies
- Expansion of the available data especially with regard to technologies that are just being developed
- Elaboration of representative data sets under German framework conditions for technologies and energy carriers based on biomass
- Provision of a web based IT infrastructure for a flexible, modular use and for the update of the data base
The results should help the government to develop a sustainable and viable biomass strategy in Germany. They contribute to solving the complex issues of biomass for energy supply, of resource management, and of food production.
The work is carried out by a consortium consisting of several scientific institutions and a commercial enterprise.
In order to ensure the support of the biomass strategy, an advisory council consisting of representatives of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), of the Bundesministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz (Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection - BMELV), of the Umweltbundesamt (Federal Environment Agency – UBA), as well as of other relevant federal agencies will be established.
The project is integrated in the "Funding Programme Biomass for Energy" of the BMU and is, therefore, also part of the National Climate Initiative.
