“District Future – Urban Lab” explores the question how a good life can be achieved by taking sustainability into account in Karlsruhe’s Oststadt. The urban development project banks on a science which counts on the citizens and transfers research into the living environment of the people.

During the last year, the project team and the Bürgerstiftung Karlsruhe (citizens’ foundation Karlsruhe) were therefore looking for people who were willing to develop and perform “SustainabilityExperiments”. In May 2016 four citizens’ groups with very different ideas were chosen from the rough dozen of submissions. Being granted financial and scientific support, they were able to realize their experiments during the last nine months.

The successful work of the SustainabilityExperiments will be presented to the public on Sunday, 21 May between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the context of the “N!Tage – Nachhaltigkeit gemeinsam feiern!” (S!Days – celebrating sustainability together!) in the Future Space for Sustainability and Science (Rintheimer Straße 46, 76131 Karlsruhe). The event is part of the program of the Baden-Württemberg Sustainability Days.

The program of the national and regional action days also includes the photo exhibition “Gesichter der Nachhaltigkeit” (Faces of Sustainability) in the ITAS Foyer (Karlstraße 11, 76131 Karlsruhe). The exhibition is open from Tuesdays to Fridays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Tuesday, 6 June to Friday, 7 July 2017. It offers an atmospheric photographic insight into the various understandings and practices of sustainability and presents a selection of photographic impressions from hundreds of conversations held over the last two years on the topic of sustainability – with experts as well as citizens. In this way, the exhibition brings together a wide variety of perspectives, languages, ideas, and forms of expression.

The Karlsruhe School of Sustainability, the KIT Center Humans and Technology, and the ITAS project District Future want to contribute with these pictures to the public discourse on sustainable development. (11.05.2017)
