Bioeconomy in Baden-Württemberg

ITAS supports politics and society in advancing a bioeconomy in Baden-Württemberg by accompanying research in social sciences and ecology.

In 2013, the state of Baden-Württemberg set up a research strategy entitled "Establishing bioeconomy in the system" and laid the foundations for a comprehensive research program on the use of bio-based raw materials in the fields of lignocellulose, biogas and microalgae. More than 40 projects are funded by the program, mainly in the natural and technical sciences, but also in the fields of modelling, potential analysis and impact assessment. ITAS will explore visions, goals and expectations of the research teams involved, identify possible changes in the existing value chains as well as impacts on the environment and economy, outline the relationships between stakeholders involved in advancing a bioeconomy, analyze legislative framework conditions and possible obstacles, and discuss alternative implementation paths.

The results will contribute to the overall analysis of the transformation process and its possible implications, sharpen the system understanding within Baden-Württemberg's bioeconomy research program and provide orientation for the further development of a bioeconomy based on the principles of sustainability. The project is carried out in close cooperation with research teams from the three thematic clusters of biogas, lignocellulose and microalgae as well as the competence network "Modelling the Bioeconomy".
