The Miguel Sánchez‐Mazas Chair (University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU), the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS, KIT Karlsruhe) and the The Käte Hamburger Kolleg: Cultures of Research at RWTH Aachen University will be hosting an International Summer School for PhD students, titled “The transformation challenge: Re-Thinking cultures of research”. The Summer School is part of the 42nd edition of the UPV/EHU Summer Courses in Donostia-San Sebastián.

The conference will bring together researchers from the fields of engineering, philosophy, and neighboring disciplines such as technology assessment to address the theme of Understanding, Assessing, and Designing Responsible Futures. fPET 2024 will provide an opportunity to meet like-minded researchers, and to present and discuss issues on the intersection of engineering and philosophy.

Karlsruhe is becoming warmer and drier as climate changes in southwest Germany. Large city trees often become the first target for removal during infrastructure projects. At the same time, the poor vitality of city trees due to climate change impacts, diseases, and early aging of trees also sometimes contributes to the premature removal of trees. In this presentation, I will show the importance of large trees in cooling and biodiversity conservation in urban areas (e.g., streets, cemeteries, and parks) and provide some outlook on improving arboriculture and tree care so that the large trees can be kept in the city for a longer time. I will provide examples from the concluded GrüneLunge, ongoing URBORETUM, and other research projects.

There is a great need for transparent and independent knowledge in times of "polycrises" and technological leaps. NTA11 (18-20.11.2024 in Berlin) is therefore dedicated to the current challenges in scientific policy advice.
