Project description

This project moved especially in two directions. Initially at the forefront were system analytic studies on the energetic, economic, and ecological point balance of processes for improving the energetic utilization of stalky (e.g., straw) energy carriers from plants. Work on the project took place in a team, with different institutes from the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe Research Center) making contributions. The first objective was the completion of a market study on gasification of cereal straw. Initial estimates and valuations were also prepared on the options for substituting plant-derived raw and residual materials for nonrenewable raw materials along the lines of sustainable development. Furthermore, papers were also prepared for two assessment reports on the combustion of biomass for the generation of heat and electricity or for the gasification and pyrolysis of biomass.
