Project description

The main aim of RRI Practice is to analyze Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) related discourses and pathways to implementation, including barriers and drivers, research conducting and research funding organizations, in European and non-European countries, in order to identify, understand, disseminate and promote RRI implementation best practices that can be scaled up at European and global levels.

The global level of the consortium offers a unique space to explore RRI in various national settings and also to expand the network of ITAS further. The main objectives are to develop an analytic framework for analyzing organizations' operationalization of responsibility and RRI, and associated barriers and drivers, allowing for the design of well-targeted RRI objectives, measures and indicators. For this, RRI Practice will conduct 12 national case studies, containing in total 23 organizational RRI reviews and Outlooks, as well as an internal RRI report for the project.

Building on this the project team will analyze and compare barriers to and drivers for successful implementation of RRI for each of the EC RRI policy keys (Ethics, Public Engagement, Gender, Science Education, Open Access), as well as on other interpretations of RRI provided by the organizations studied.

ITAS will conduct the national German case study focusing on and partnering with the Helmholtz Association as one of the main and largest funding organizations in Germany. Further, ITAS is responsible for conducting two international workshops within the project. These will bring together representatives from research funding and conducting organizations to discuss and exchange on ways towards RRI in their specific organizational and national contexts. ITAS with its long-standing experience with policy advice can provide valuable input and support better implementation of RRI and related concepts.
