Abstract

First a short introduction to Technology Assessment is given and it is argued that there are good reasons to carry out a Technology Assessment on Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Digital Rights Management Systems. Secondly, a particular dialogue approach called "informed dialogue" is introduced and the INDICARE project, applying this approach to DRM, is explained. INDICARE "The Informed Dialogue about Consumer Acceptability of DRM Solutions in Europe" is a project funded by the European Commission (http://www.indicare.org/) coordinated by ITAS. The third part of the presentation is devoted to DRM properly trying to identify DRM issues highly relevant for society and for policy making. The selection of 10 major issues is the result of systematically checking recent Technology Assessment exercises dealing with DRM.
