Newly published: "Shaping Emerging Technologies" [28.11.2013]

The Society for the Study of Nanoscience and Emerging Technologies (S.NET) set out in 2009 to build an international community of scholars and practitioners engaged with nanotechnology and other new fields of technoscience. Since then, the annual meetings of the society - robustly attended by multidisciplinary scholars, policy actors, and civil society organizations from across the globe - have shown that S.NET provides a lively forum with added value for many different people interested in new and emerging technologies.

"Shaping Emerging Technologies" constitutes the fourth volume of the series "Studies of New And Emerging Technologies / S.NET" (IOS Press, Amsterdam, and AKA, Berlin), showcasing the research activities of the vibrant, multidisciplinary S.NET community. It contains a selection of the papers presented at the fourth Annual S.NET Conference that took place at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, October 22nd to 25th, 2012.

The first section of the volume revolves around 'Engagement' activities, be they public, stakeholder, or laboratory engagements, providing suggestions for concrete procedures as well as more analytical perspectives. The institutional arrangements structuring innovation processes are the focus of the section on 'Regulatory Governance', which reflects on the different shapes, effects, and further development directions of both hard and soft law apparatuses and on different institutional arrangements and practices of intellectual property protection. The social, cultural, and economic shaping of artifacts, innovations, and the related innovation processes is particularly visible in the chapters in the 'Innovation section', both as retrospective and prospective analysis. The work presented in this volume is not only rooted in academic discourse, but also informed by and intended to be of help to those struggling with the complexities of innovation on an everyday level.
